a white spot where only inspirations and ideas stand out
The Province of Utrecht founded the UtrechtLab. An institute that stands for collaboration between parties in order to make complex and extensive projects open to discussion. A design for a stimulating environment in which people can discuss and in which collaboration is stimulated.
Our society in general, and more specifically the Province of Utrecht, faces more assignments that are very complex, extensive and above all require a multi-disciplinary approach. Collaboration is the way to reach achievable solutions. The province does not regard itself as the responsible organising party, but more as a partner that does not only facilitate, but rather stimulates.
The concept for a ‘white spot’ is chosen analogous to the stimulating environment of team building sessions, where everyone is a guest. A neutral space with an island-like character where collaboration is key, and discussions are based on content and facts.
A plateau, floating above the floor of the hall, marks the territory of the Pop-up. The free character of the curtains creates a space that is informal and laid back. Everything is white, even the flowers. Reusing objects and materials is not only done for environmental reasons, but also to stimulate creative thinking.
The interior is designed with consideration for adaptability and flexibility. For each session a more dynamic or relaxing setting can be chosen. The Pop-up was designed for a three month period. Recently however, the client decided to keep the design for a period of at least three years and moved the setup to a different location.
The design for the Pop-up is at first a specific solution for a specific location. Practice shows that the expectations were transcended. This leads to the conclusion that the ‘white spot’ can be used as a generic solution for a laid back, and foremost neutral, meeting point, regardless whether it is realised in an office environment or in the city.
