temporary accommodation for ICC The Hague

The project encompasses the extension and adaptation of the existing “De Haagse Arc” building, to become the temporary international courthouse. Broadly speaking, it concerns the public reception rooms, the press centre, the pretrial chamber and two courtrooms, with the necessary security measures and interior. As this is a temporary situation, a sober concept was chosen, with maximum deference to the existing situation. An emphatic choice was made for re-usable materials, wherever possible. The majority of public functions have been accommodated in the former parking garage. In order to solve the problem of the limited height of this area, openings have been made at strategic points in the existing building, and we have used light materials in combination with an optimistic colour scheme.
After temporary use of 7 to 10 years, other functions can be accommodated in the rooms now realised, or the adapted sections can be returned to their original state.
Unfortunately we are not able to give a detailed report of this project, due to the confidentiality clause imposed on us by the client. The project is a cooperation between the national government buildings department and our agency.
