The powerful use of a limited palette of materials, comprising bamboo, glass, leather and metal, has created an environment which is pleasant and representative yet also extreme and surprising.
The assignment was the complete interior of a storey in an existing office building in Geneva, for the Dutch Permanent Representation at the United Nations. The programme includes a representative entrance, offices, a meeting area and a conference room. In between the glass interior walls of the office zones, the central zone with facilities functions and meeting places is finished entirely in soft, warm materials: bamboo and red leather. This central area lends shape to the ceremonial route between the entrance foyer and the conference room, both clad in woven stainless steel. This hard material, traditionally from the outside world, has been transformed into an agreeable interior quality indoors. The contrasting materials result in a diversity of interior atmospheres which are supported by the lighting, varying from upright standard lamps to illuminated skirting boards.
Just like the surprise of the leather after the futuristic style of the reception area, the homely interior of the conference room contrasts sharply with its exterior. The glass ceiling of the conference room, its bamboo finish, specially designed table and climate control behind the woven stainless steel wall cladding, all serve to arrive at a working ambience of the highest possible standard. Despite the fresh contrasts, the entire interior has a sober allure in keeping with the nature of its diplomatic function.
