architecten van Mourik

As of 1st September 2008, B A R  and architecten van Mourik have joined forces under the name 'architecten van Mourik'.

architecten van Mourik was formed from Van Mourik Vermeulen architecten, which in turn was formed from architecten- en ingenieursbureau ir. D. van Mourik. Both agency names were coupled to the architects in charge. By now, the company name represents a team, rather than the individual architects. Peter Vermeulen, Sjoerd Dantuma and Piet Grouls have been partners in the company since 2001.
Architecten- en ingenieursbureau ir D. van Mourik was founded in 1955 and strove towards modern design, particularly through the use of innovative construction techniques. The 1958 design for an IBM development laboratory in Uithoorn marked the transition to large-scale, non-residential assignments. This led to more attention for high-quality industrial building and for careful urban embedding of the projects. The package of assignments became gradually more impressive over the years; beside a wide range of non-residential projects, housing was to play an important role, sometimes in combination with urban development assignments.
The architecture is characterised by an integrated approach, in which synthesis is sought between a clear architectonic concept, optimum functionality and well measured technical detailing, within the available budget and in consultation with the client.
Extensive knowledge of the latest developments in building technology is creatively deployed for the benefit of the architectonic concept. And so each new assignment gives an impulse for an own character and identity of the project, enabling us to embody this in detail in as natural a manner as possible.

B A R is a young firm of architects, founded by Joost Glissenaar and Klaas van der Molen after winning Europan 5 in 1998. Up until 2008, they have worked on a wide range of design assignments, from urban development studies to detailed interiors. They developed a design strategy capable of producing original architecture with a simple and clear creative language. The motive behind the design is its use, the programme of requirements is analysed candidly and critically. This analysis forms the basis for a design proposal which takes a stance in relation to the use and perception. And so they attempt to come to a surprising design concept for each new assignment, in which complex issues are translated into clear solutions.
Besides its use, the significance of the object in the urban development context is an important reason for arriving at an architectonic design. It is particularly the conditions for use and the programme surrounding the location, rather than the morphological context, which is important.
In 2006, they received the AM/NAi prize and the Van Eck prize for the Bridge House in Middelburg.

B A R + architecten van Mourik are one, innovation, analysis, experience in a complementary combination.
