architecten van Mourik was formed from architecten- en ingenieursbureau ir. D. van Mourik. The agency's name used to be coupled to the architects in charge. By now, the company name represents a team (Peter Vermeulen, Sjoerd Dantuma, Piet Grouls, Klaas van de Molen), rather than individual architects.
Architecten- en ingenieursbureau ir D. van Mourik was founded in 1955 and strove towards modern design, particularly through the use of innovative construction techniques. The 1958 design for an IBM development laboratory in Uithoorn marked the transition to large-scale, non-residential assignments. This led to more attention for high-quality industrial building and for careful urban embedding of the projects. The package of assignments became gradually more impressive over the years; beside a wide range of non-residential projects, housing was to play an important role, sometimes in combination with urban development assignments.
The architecture is characterised by an integrated approach, in which synthesis is sought between a clear architectonic concept, optimum functionality and well measured technical detailing, within the available budget and in consultation with the client. Extensive knowledge of the latest developments in building technology is creatively deployed for the benefit of the architectonic concept. And so each new assignment gives an impulse for an own character and identity of the project, enabling us to embody this in detail in as natural a manner as possible.
