On 7th September, architecten van Mourik was one of the three selected architects to present a design for the new council offices in Vlaardingen. For the coming two weeks, the proposals by architecten van Mourik, cepezed and Kraaijvanger Urbis will be on show in an exhibition in the City Auditorium in Vlaardingen.
The assignment was for a sustainable, transparent, low energy and flexible design.
architecten van Mourik proposes realisation of a compact and transparent building, in order that the building fits in with the historical city centre in an elegant manner. In order to limit the inconvenience for local residents, architecten van Mourik also proposes retaining and re-using the basement of the existing council offices. The brick facade of the new building will be insulated with sheep's wool, the lightweight window frames will be fitted with triple insulated glass, and horizontal lamellae ensure enough daylight, reduce the use of artificial light and contribute to the privacy of the staff. The office will be fitted with a low energy climate control system which will provide a comfortable interior climate. The facade recedes in the top 2 building layers, and runs through to the rooftop garden which is accessible from the top floor restaurant. The green character of the rooftop garden is continued via the central gallery until the spacious public hall. The new council offices will be literally and figuratively attached to the historical city hall by means of a transparent hall, which will be suitable for staging all kinds of activities, such as an election market, Christmas celebrations or an exhibition.
